If you’re craving a romantasy that feels like a blend of Sarah J Maas and Rebecca Yarros (or even Metal Slinger), Shield of Sparrows might be your next obsession. Bonus? It’s getting adapted by Amazon and will be in some capacity written by none other than Derek Kolstad, screenwriter for one of my favorite franchises: John Wick.
Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry shares a book birthday with Silver Elite by Dani Francis (May 6, 2025), and as two of the most talked about releases of 2025, I RAN—not walked—to my nearest Walmart to snatch a signed copy of Shield of Sparrows (also grabbing the last copy of Silver Elite), before rushing home to read them back to back.
Despite being from two totally different genres—dystopian romance and romantasy—it felt like these books were constantly being pitted against one another from the beginning. I wanted to see what the fuss was about, so I started with Silver Elite.
After finishing both, I was pleasantly surprised to find that both books featured awesome worldbuilding (magic, creatures, dangerous settings), family secrets, twists galore, and hotttttt enemies-to-lovers romance), and both left me wanting to find out what happens next. I enjoyed both books!
What I didn’t enjoy: my biggest criticism for Shield of Sparrows was how heavy-handed the foreshadowing was. I spent large chunks of the book a bit bored (especially in Treow), waiting to see if my suspicions would ever be confirmed. I like when writers tell the story in a way that affirms what I suspect and keeps the plot moving—I’m not saying they have to acknowledge everything, just…something. I don’t like feeling strung along for the sake of putting off a reveal for as long as possible. (You can hear more of my thoughts over on YouTube.) Anywho, onto the positive!
Since we’re all suffering through a monstrous post-Onyx Storm, post-Silver Elite, and now post-Shield of Sparrows hangover as we count down the days until Broken Dove and Rites of the Starling drop, I’ve put together a character + plot cheat sheet to help us all when the next one arrives. 😂
With that said, this blog is full of spoilers. You have been warned. Hopefully this guide helps you recall the most important things that happened!

Shield of Sparrows characters
Who is Odessa Cross?
Odessa Cross is our FMC and the eldest (reject) princess of Quentis. She’s artistic and introspective and literally starts the book engaged and standing on the edge of a cliff wondering if anyone would care if she jumped. A few scenes later, she’s claimed as a bride prize (forced to marry the Turan prince), and has to act as a spy for her arsehole father, King Cross. By the end of the book, she steps up and comes into her own by killing General Banner (her ex-fiance), and survives the crux attack with Evie and her baby tarkin, Faze.
Kinda like Princess Odette from The Swan Princess transformed into a swan, there are major hints throughout Shield of Sparrows that Odessa (and her mom) are a crux.

Who is The Guardian?
AKA Ransom Wolfe. He’s our hot af MMC and the true crown prince of Turah, though he hides his identity by using a body double (Dray/Zavier). He’s infected with Lyssa, an infectious magical disease that grants him inhuman speed and strength. The downside is that it’s slowly killing him. By the end of the book, Ransom sacrifices himself and is carried off during the crux migration/attack to save Odessa and Evie. The epilogue reveals he survived and is coming to find his wife.
Other characters in Shield of Sparrows
| Name | Description |
|---|---|
| The Infection (Lyssa) | Okay, technically not a character, but you could argue its presence throughout the book feels like one. It’s the magical disease from monster essence + alchemy. Activated through bite. It’s why Ransom has his powers…but also—it’s slowly killing him. |
| Dray (Zavier Wolfe) | Zavier is Ransom’s loyal cousin and double who acts as the public face of the Turan prince and a surrogate father to Evie. He bears the burden of the crown and the secret of Ransom’s infection to protect their bloodline. During the climax at Ellder, he is mortally wounded by one of General Banner’s throwing knives while trying to save Evie and is left fighting for his life. |
| Evangeline (Evie) | Ransom’s secret half-sister and the true heir to the Turan throne, (though she is raised in secrecy to protect her from King Ramsey’s wrath). Evie is curious and brave, viewing Faze the tarkin as her pet. At the end of the story, she escapes the destruction of Ellder with Odessa. |
| King Ramsey Wolfe | Main antagonist and broken king of Turah, driven by unrequited love and paranoia after the perceived betrayal of his wife, Luella. He burns libraries to destroy knowledge and creates a secret militia of soldiers infected with Lyssa in a failed attempt to replicate Ransom’s powers. He flees as Ellder falls during the early crux migration. |
| Luella | Ransom and Evie’s mother and a tragic rogue alchemist who created the Lyssa infection while trying to formulate a protective elixir against the crux. Driven by maternal fear, her mistake dooms monsters and men alike. She is brutally killed by a crux in the courtyard of Ellder right in front of Ransom. |
| General Banner | Quentin general and Odessa’s former fiancé who is driven by a visceral hatred for the Guardian, whom he blames for his brother’s death. He is revealed to be secretly in love with and engaged to Odessa’s maid, Brielle. After mortally wounding Dray, he is killed by Odessa in a moment of survival. |
| Brielle | Brielle is Odessa’s lady’s maid who follows her to Turah to be near her secret fiancé, Banner. Her loyalty is tested by the court’s betrayals, and she is ultimately carried away by a crux during the unexpected migration at Ellder. |
| Jocelyn | Odessa’s lady’s maid but is revealed to be a ruthless Quentin spy working for Banner. Her betrayal leads King Ramsey to Luella’s location, and she is killed by the crux during the initial attack. |
| Cathlin | Librarian who is revealed as Luella’s best friend and a surrogate mother figure to Evie. Although bound by a blood oath, she strategically provides Odessa with information to uncover the truth about Lyssa. She survives the siege and remains a loyal ally to Ransom. |
| Tillia | Formidable Turan warrior and combat trainer who sharpens Odessa into a fighter. She is the wife of Halston and is pregnant by the end of the book, surviving the attack and waiting for her husband to heal. |
| Halston | Turan ranger and hunting party leader who is fiercely loyal to Ransom and Zavier. He fights the crux during the migration and loses his leg to the monster, ending the book in the infirmary fighting for his life. |
| King Cross | Odessa’s cold and calculating father, known as the Gold King of Quentis. He trades Odessa as a bride prize to use her as a spy to infiltrate the hidden capital of Allesaria. |
| Mae Cross | Odessa’s bold, favored half-sister who was originally groomed to be the Sparrow for the Turan prince. She is spared the marriage when Ransom claims Odessa instead. |
| The Voster | Mysterious brotherhood of hairless priests who practice blood and fluid magic for ancient treaties. |
| Voster High Priest | Powerful, enigmatic leader of the Voster brotherhood, distinguished by his green eyes and long green nails. He enforces ancient treaties with chilling magic and shows a mysterious interest in Odessa’s unique heritage. |
| Brother Dime | Voster emissary for Quentis who wields fluid magic to deliver messages. At the end of the book, he rescues Odessa and Evie by leading them through secret escape tunnels. |
| Faze | The starving baby tarkin monster rescued by Odessa from a den. He becomes a protective companion to Evie and escapes Ellder with the girls. |
Types of creatures in Shield of Sparrows
| Creature | Description |
|---|---|
| Crux | Massive, eagle-like monsters. The most feared predators in Calandra. Migrations occur every 30yrs, blacking out the sky for months, and devastating the entire continent. Females have black feathers and wing spikes, males have auburn feathers and thick horns. At the end of the book, Ransom discovers a slain crux transformed into a human woman. |
| Marroweels | Deadly sea monsters with sapphire-blue scales, iridescent fins, and a rigid white bone protruding from their skulls. Moved from the deep ocean and terrorize Quentis’s trade routes, leaving no survivors. Marroweels were the Turans’ bride prize (they killed 7). Infected males are double the size of females and bleed dark green blood |
| Tarkin | Beautiful, deadly beasts that look like tigercats with ruby-red fur and pink stripes. Iron-like armor scales along the spine + violet eyes. Odessa rescues a baby tarkin (Faze), who becomes something of a pet companion to Evie. Adult tarkins are very hard to kill due to their scales. |
| Bariwolves | Wolf-like monsters with glossy black fur that shines blue in the light. Their back halves are covered in scales and needle-like spikes. Hunt in packs and communicate using a series of clicks. One-eyed bariwolf is the one that bit Ransom 4 years ago, giving him Lyssa-fueled powers. |
| Grizzurs | Massive bear-like creatures with coarse cinnamon fur and snow-white spikes along their spines. Long snouts with jagged teeth + claws as wide as a man’s shoulders. Poor nocturnal vision, making it safer to travel near them at night, but infected grizzurs lose their fear of fire and become hyper-aggressive. |
| Lionwicks | Nocturnal predators that resemble mountain lions but with smooth, golden leathery coats. Spiked, barbed tail that is twice the length of their body. Excellent climbers and often trapped using snares in Turah rather than being killed outright (unless they become feral). |
| Fenek | Small, fox-like monsters hunted nearly to extinction. Source of fenek tusk powder (the most potent poison in Calandra). Odessa was nearly killed by this powder when she was 13. Voster High Priest noted that the Lyssa infection feels similar to the blood of those poisoned by the fenek. |
| Kaverine | Small, vicious cousins to wolverines that live in the Laine deserts. Can see perfectly at night (which is why their dung, korakin, is used in alchemy). Korakin is used in medicine to block pain. Also a highly addictive hallucinogen and a key ingredient in the Lyssa-like elixir created by Luella. |
| Alligask | Scute-covered monsters in swamps and bogs with massive jaws + long tails. Incredible healing abilities and nearly impossible to kill unless beheaded. Shed hides in Ozarth bogs are absorbed by cave ginger (another ingredient Luella used to create the elixir that accidentally made the Lyssa infection). |
Locations in Shield of Sparrows

| Location | Description |
|---|---|
| Roslo (in Quentis) | Capital of Quentis, known for white buildings that glow in the sunlight and a gold-plated castle. In the throne room, the Guardian claims Odessa as a bride prize, leading to a rushed, blood-bound wedding ceremony in the castle sanctuary. |
| Sanctuary cliffside (Roslo) | Cliff overlooking the ocean that serves as Odessa’s personal sanctuary from royal life. This is where the book starts, with Odessa leaping into the water. |
| Krisenth Crossing | Treacherous sea passage between Quentis and Turah, known for storms and monster attacks. During the voyage to Turah, a male marroweel attacks the ship. Odessa falls overboard and is almost eaten before the Guardian uses his super-speed to save her. |
| Treow (Turah) | Secluded Turan encampment of homes built high into massive evergreen trees, connected by rope bridges and ladders for safety from monsters. Odessa begins her combat training here and meets the secret princess Evie. Later, King Ramsey burns down the library and a Tarkin attacks, Odessa rescuing a boy named Marco and finding a baby Tarkin, Faze. |
| Ashmore (Turah) | Village on the plains where houses have brass bells for warnings and residents are digging migration tunnels for the coming crux. Odessa sneaks here to find information but witnesses a bariwolf attack. In the chaos, she kills an infected man to survive (her first kill). |
| Ellder (Turah) | Massive timber fortress built directly against smooth, gray mountain cliffs, featuring dungeons and hidden migration tunnels. Where the Guardian reveals he is actually the true Crown Prince, Ransom Wolfe. Also where Banner wounds Dray (Ransom’s body double) and Luella is killed by a crux migrating too early. |
| Ravalli (Turah) | Unique village where log houses are sunken into the ground and roofs are fitted with metal spears to deter the crux. Odessa and Ransom visit its blacksmith and the paperman, Samuel Hay. King Ramsey arrives and burns down Samuel’s home to destroy knowledge. |

What happens in Shield of Sparrows (plot summary)
The bride prize & rushed vows
Odessa Cross is our reject-princess, constantly overlooked in favor of her sister, Mae. Her engagement to General Banner is upended when Turan warriors arrive to collect payment for killing marroweels. The Guardian (Ransom) invokes the Chain of Sevens—an ancient law that allows a warrior who slays seven monsters to claim a bride prize. Suddenly, Odessa is then married off to the Turan Prince Zavier in a blood-bound ceremony. Her father, King Cross, tasks her with a secret mission: infiltrate Turah’s hidden capital, Allesaria, and kill the Guardian.
Into the unknown
The sailing to Turah doesn’t go so great. A marroweel attack nearly kills Odessa, but the Guardian reveals his super-speed to save her. Once in Turah, she’s taken to Treow, a secluded treehouse encampment. They’re there a loooong time. While training with the Guardian and his sexy smirks and teasing, Odessa notices monsters are infected with Lyssa. They have green blood and show extreme aggression.
The truth in blood
The vibe between Odessa and the Guardian shifts from hate to attraction. They grow closer, and he reveals he’s actually Ransom Wolfe, the true crown prince. The guy she thought she married is his double, Dray/Zavier. Ransom confesses he’s infected with Lyssa and that his death is inevitable. We also learn the origin of the sickness: Ransom’s mother, Luella, created it as a protective elixir that mutated into a plague.
Shield of Sparrows ending (spoiler alert: sacrifice & chaos)
Just as the truth comes out, King Ramsey arrives at Ellder with an army to reclaim his son and punish Luella. He’s accompanied by General Banner and Jocelyn, the spy who betrayed them.
In the chaos, the crux migration starts early and the fortress falls to total devastation.
- Luella is brutally killed by a crux right in front of Ransom
- Dray/Zavier (Ransom’s double) is mortally wounded by one of Banner’s throwing knives while trying to save Evie
- Odessa finally takes charge and kills Banner
Still outnumbered, Ransom lets himself get carried off by a crux to buy Odessa and Evie time to escape. He leaves Odessa with his leather cuff—which contains a secret map to Allesaria (the Turan capital Odessa’s father wanted her to find out).
How Shield of Sparrows ends
Guided by the weird Voster, Brother Dime, Odessa flees with Evie and the baby tarkin, Faze. She doesn’t want to be a pawn anymore—instead, she embraces being a queen and resolves to find a cure for Lyssa and protect survivors. The epilogue reveals that Ransom survived the fall by killing the crux and is now coming to find his wife. 🥵
Shield of Sparrows quotes
What if I jumped? Would anyone care? No. Not for me. Not for the wrong princess of Quentis.
You are mine, Odessa… Even if we are kingdoms apart, you are mine.
I am loyal to my people. Does it matter who they believe I am? A prince or a guardian? I strive to keep them safe. From the monsters with claws. And the monsters with crowns.
Final thoughts
I’m OBSESSED with the enemies-to-lovers trope, and the tension and high stakes of Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry was a done deal for me. Plus, the monsters were so unique! Odessa’s transformation from reject-princess to indominable force was satisfying to read and the kind of growth I live for. While the secrets and foreshadowing were overdone and dragged on until the end of the book, the romantic tension and that horrible cliffhanger have me desperate for book two!
When Rites of the Starling drops, I’m hoping for some answers and to jump right back into the thick of the plot. I’m cautiously optimistic, especially after getting burned by Brimstone (unfortunately, the Quicksilver sequel did not live up to the hype).
If you’ve read Shield of Sparrows, what did you think? Agree or disagree? Anything I missed?
